País 25 de Abril

Carlos Moedas was speaking to journalists during his participation in the 25th April parade in Lisbon, which brought together thousands of people on Avenida da Liberdade, in a demonstration of what the mayor classified as "a party of unity" for the Portuguese.
"We need to be united. The 25th of April does not belong to some or others, it belongs to everyone, to all Portuguese people and this union needs to be real", he said. And he recalled that he owes what he is today to the revolution: "I would not be mayor, I would not have had the career that I had, because I was a kid from a poor family in Alentejo and here I am and I see this union among the Portuguese". Carlos Moedas said that society has become polarised, "not only in Portugal, but also in Europe" and that "this polarisation is bad for democracy, this distancing, this hatred that is often created". "Today's problem is not only the extreme right, it is also the extreme left; there is a polarisation of extremes, on the left and on the right, which is dangerous for society and for democracy", he observed. "The most important and the most difficult thing today is to be a moderate politician and a moderate politician must also have, at times, an aggressive language of this moderation, because this moderation is democracy", he continued. Thousands of people took to the streets today in various parts of Portugal, holding carnations and posters with slogans and recognition for the Carnation Revolution. In Lisbon, Avenida da Liberdade was completely full from Marquês de Pombal and nearby avenues, towards a Rossio that had not been so full of participants in the commemorations of April 25, 1974 for several years.
