"The day when we commemorate 50 years of democracy and freedom is also a dark day for INEM: 28 ambulances are currently closed due to the lack of Pre-Hospital Emergency Technicians. Thousands of Portuguese people do not have access to timely and differentiated emergency medical care because INEM is currently unable to fulfill its mission", reveals the union in a statement.

According to STEPH, the "shortage of technicians is mainly due to the mismanagement that has prevailed in INEM over the last few years", blaming the "retrograde, conservative and ineffective policies that increasingly drive professionals away from the institute".

"These technicians deserve respect, treatment, consideration and appreciation of their salaries and their career. We have already wasted too much time", can also be read in the press release.

And it continues: "enough of a management that has been squandering INEM's assets and making the services increasingly weaker, more ineffective, with great detriment to the population. It is the citizens who often pay with their own lives for INEM's inability to fulfill its noble, necessary and indispensable mission".

In this context, the union guarantees that "it will not fail to use all means at its disposal so that April 25th and freedom are also felt in INEM, through the appreciation of its professionals, for more effective emergency medical care, closer, that better serves the citizens and saves more lives".

The president of STEPH, Rui Lázaro, also revealed to Lusa that "also in the CODU (Urgent Patient Referral Centers) today, similarly to what happened in recent days, there are several service desks closed due to the lack of technicians".

Explaining the direct consequences of the reduction in resources, the union leader stated that, "in addition to the delay in sending ambulances, there may be delays in answering emergency calls".

Lusa contacted INEM, but has not yet received a response.
