25th November? "The main civil ally was the PS, and in it Mário Soares"

The President of the Republic contested today the idea that the 25th of November of 1975 represented "the victory of the right of the right", countering that at that moment "the main civil ally was the PS, and in it Mário Soares".

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking during a lecture-debate with around 300 secondary school students about the 50th anniversary of 25 April, at the Carmo Barracks, in Lisbon, in response to a young man who asked him if he did not consider that 25 November deserves more prominence.

The Head of State began by emphasising that the Executive Commission for the Commemorations of the 50th anniversary of 25 April included 25 November in its programme as one of the dates to be marked, among others, because "it was an important moment in that two-year period that runs from 1974 to 1976".

"Therefore, it makes sense. It is not the only one, it was not the only one, it will not be the only one, but it makes sense", he considered.

Then, the President of the Republic wanted to explain "who made 25 November" and stated that "it is good to make it clear" that the outcome of those events was due to "the contribution of many people", starting with the group of military signatories to the "Document of the Nine".

This group of military personnel "ranged from a moderate democratic right-wing or centre-right area to the left -- not just the PS, but to the left of the PS", excluding "some more radical sectors on the left", he described.

"But we can say, then, to be fair, that there were civilian allies. And I, to be fair, will say that the main civilian ally was the PS, and in it Mário Soares, who also made his contribution as an ally", he defended.

The President of the Republic said that "there were several other allies from more right-wing parties, in the PSD or independents", and highlighted the "decisive gesture" of the then President of the Republic Costa Gomes, who spoke with Álvaro Cunhal to convey to him what "he understood should be done by the PCP".

"And that conversation also helped on 25 November", he declared.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa concluded that today "many people talk about 25 November with a very simple view, which is: it was the victory of the right of the right, civilian and military".

"That did not correspond to what happened on 25 November. Therefore, there is a more radical right-wing sector that would have preferred a solution other than the one reached on 25 November, as, moreover, radical left-wing sectors would have preferred a solution other than the one that was reached", he added.

The events of 25 November, in which antagonistic military forces clashed on the ground and the so-called moderate wing of the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) won, marked the end of the so-called Ongoing Revolutionary Process (PREC).
