"The Tourism Indicator predicts that around 230,000 overnight stays will have been registered in the entire region in March, in all tourist accommodation establishments (hotels, local accommodation and rural tourism)", reads a publication by SREA, released on its website.

According to the Regional Statistics Service, "the value of this estimate of overnight stays is 9.7% higher when compared to the provisional value of the homologous month (209.7 thousand)".

The Tourism Indicator report also highlights the number of passengers disembarked at the Azores airports in March, coming from abroad and from the national territory (excluding between the islands).

According to data previously disclosed by SREA, passengers from international flights (15,220) increased by 53.5%, while travelers from the mainland and Madeira (70,259) increased by 2.9%.

The publication also highlights the withdrawals and purchases at ATMs and automatic payment terminals (TPA) made by nationals (178,029 million euros) and foreigners (15,969 million euros), in the month of March, in the Azores.

Purchases made at TPA reached 148.1 million euros (9.1% more than in the homologous period), of which 133.6 million with national bank cards (up 8%) and 14.5 million with international bank cards (up 19.8%).

Withdrawals from ATMs reached 45.9 million euros (down 4.1%), of which 44.4 million national (down 3.8%) and 1.5 million international (down 12.4%).

According to SREA, the Tourism Indicator (IT) "aims to estimate the general evolution of economic activity in the tourism sector in the Autonomous Region of the Azores".

"The IT-Azores results from the addition of the estimates of overnight stays registered in the three types of tourist accommodation and is released about three weeks before the publication of the highlight of the Tourist Activity", reads the publication.

The estimate of overnight stays in the hotel industry, rural tourism and local accommodation "uses the values registered in the Guest Stay Survey in Hotels and other accommodation" and the "extrapolation of trends according to the expected response rate in each case".
