A lottery ticket has dramatically changed the life of an Aussie family who had been doing it tough. The Bakers, who are now swapping their modest Penrith home for a waterfront mansion on the Gold Coast, won $4.2 million after buying a ticket in the Mater Prize Home lottery, which supports cancer research – a cause close to their hearts.

The family of five’s struggles began in 2022, when dad Dean Baker was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was unable to work.

This forced mum Narelle to take on three jobs to make ends meet. She worked as a teacher’s aide, a cleaner and a checkout operator at a supermarket.

“It was very, very, very stressful for me, very tiring,” she told 9News’ A Current Affair, adding it was “hard” because on top of Dean’s illness, the couple have a son “on the spectrum”.

With bills mounting, Dean suggested to Narelle that she stop buying lottery tickets to ease the pressure on the family budget – but she didn’t listen, deciding to give it one more go and it paid off.

She was dyeing her hair with daughter Amy when she found out about the win. “I just remember collapsing on the floor and crying and saying, ‘I can’t believe it’,” she said.

“We never thought it would happen to us,” added Dean.

Dean and Narelle have been able to retire eight years earlier than planned and have moved into their new home. Despite this, they don’t plan on giving up on the lottery, particularly because the proceeds go towards helping other families.

“You never know, one day we might need that research,” daughter Amy said, referring to the cancer research.

“We’ll keep buying tickets, not because we want to win like we did, but because we’re supporting a good cause,” added Dean.
