Burkina Faso's Superior Council of Communication (CSC) has "decided to suspend the programs of the two international radios (British BBC and American VOA) that broadcast in Ouagadougou for a period of two weeks," according to a press release from the regulatory body.

The CSC justified this decision by the "dissemination of an article accusing the Burkinabe army of abuses against civilian populations, on Thursday, on the radios and digital platforms of BBC-Afrique and VOA".

The entity said it had "detected in the content of the said article categorical and biased statements against the Burkinabe army without tangible evidence, especially since the same article calls for an independent investigation".

In its report published on Thursday, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Human Rights Watch accused the Burkinabe army, which is fighting armed 'jihadist' groups, of having "executed at least 223 civilians", including at least 56 children, during two attacks in the north of the country.

The Burkinabe authorities, contacted by AFP, did not react to these accusations made by the non-governmental organization.

The CSC also indicated that it had "ordered" internet service providers "to suspend" access to the portals and "other digital platforms of the BBC, VOA and the NGO in the territory" of Burkina Faso.

The regulatory body considered that the "approach" of the BBC and VOA "undermines the fundamental principles of information processing, insofar as it constitutes disinformation likely to discredit the army" and "is, moreover, likely to create disturbances to public order".

The communications authority invited "all media to refrain from disseminating, through their various means of communication, [the] biased article (...) of a subversive nature", recalling that "any offender is exposed to the sanctions provided for in the texts in force".

Burkina Faso, led by the military due to coups in 2022, has already temporarily or indefinitely suspended the broadcasting of several television or radio channels and expelled foreign correspondents.
