"We are fully aware that the information presented here is far from portraying reality, as there are still many companies that do not report the occurrence of accidents, thus limiting the access of workers or their dependents to their rights", said the Minister of Labor and Social Security of Mozambique, Margarida Talapa, during the national conference on safety and health at work, held today in Maputo.

In 2023, there were 12 fewer deaths from accidents at work compared to 2022, with 26 deaths, and a reduction of more than 400 accidents, against the 1,176 recorded the previous year.

According to Margarida Talapa, in addition to the 14 deaths, of the 731 work accidents registered in 2023, a total of 561 resulted in temporary incapacity of workers, 73 in permanent partial incapacity and 83 in permanent incapacity.

The minister also warned about the impact of climate change on safety and health at work, calling for companies to adopt protection practices and improve accident reporting mechanisms in the sector.

"We appeal to professionals working in the area of safety and health at work to define mechanisms for the dissemination of awareness-raising strategies to employers on the need to create plans to protect workers from diseases related to exposure to heat", added the minister.

Every 15 seconds at least one worker dies in the world as a result of an accident at work or an occupational disease, resulting in 6,300 deaths per day and around 2.3 million per year, said the Mozambican Minister of Labor, citing estimates from the International Labor Organization (ILO).
