The five accused appeared in a Sydney children's court today where they were refused bail, New South Wales Police said in a statement.

The youths, aged between 14 and 17, face charges including possessing material capable of assisting in a terrorist act, conspiring to prepare for, or plan, a terrorist act, and possessing a knife in a public place, the statement said.

The alleged terror suspects are part of a group of seven juveniles arrested the previous day in 13 raids across western Sydney suburbs, involving 400 state and federal police officers who seized electronic devices and other evidence.

NSW Police, whose headquarters is in Sydney, said on Wednesday that five other juveniles, who were not arrested, were assisting with inquiries.

Wednesday's raids followed the stabbing of the Assyrian Church of the Good Shepherd's leader, Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, during an online service in the western Sydney suburb of Wakeley on the evening of April 15 by a 16-year-old boy.

The teenager was charged on Friday with a terrorism offence over the incident, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison in Australia. His lawyer has indicated he will argue mental illness.

The bishop, who was helped by parishioners to restrain his attacker, is recovering and has defended the decision not to censor social media footage of the attack.

The attack was followed by a riot involving hundreds of people outside the church demanding the alleged attacker be handed over, which resulted in dozens of police officers being injured and police cars and property being damaged.

Authorities have so far charged five men and a 17-year-old boy over the riot.

Australia - where most attacks have involved lone-actor knife or gun assaults in the cities of Melbourne and Sydney - has been on high alert for "likely" terrorist attacks since 2014, the third-highest of a five-tier threat level.
