Alexei Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, reacted to the suspension of priest Dmitry Safronov on Wednesday, saying she was "very grateful" to the clergyman.

"Priest Dmitry Safronov came to Alexei's grave several times and held memorial services. I am very grateful to him," Navalnaya wrote in a post on the X social network (formerly Twitter).

The widow of the Russian opposition figure also asked for "help" for him and his family after "Patriarch Kirill and the Russian Orthodox Church banned him from ministry for three years."

Safronov, who led Alexei Navalny's funeral services, was suspended and sentenced to three years of "penance."

The Moscow diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church said in a statement that Safronov would be demoted to a reader of psalms, barred from giving blessings or wearing priestly robes, and sent to another church in the Moscow region, where he would serve a three-year "penance."

At the end of that time, a (new) decision would be made, with the possibility of him being formally defrocked, "depending on feedback from his place of service," the document said, according to the British newspaper.

The decision by Patriarch Kirill, a key ally of President Putin, was not explained.

Dmitry Safronov is yet another victim of the persecution of people associated with the Russian opposition figure. The priest led Navalny's funeral services, as well as a ceremony to mark 40 days since his death last month.

Navalny died suddenly on February 16 in a remote Arctic penal colony, where he was serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges widely seen as politically motivated.

The cause of Navalny's death remains unexplained, although the politician's allies have blamed the Kremlin.
