"Israeli fighter jets and artillery fire hit some 40 Hezbollah terrorist targets," near Aita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon, including weapons storage sites, the army said in a statement.

Israel justified its attack on the area in southern Lebanon by claiming that the Shiite group had set up dozens of military facilities and infrastructure to attack Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant added that the army's Northern Command had managed to eliminate half of Hezbollah's commanders.

For its part, the Lebanese group also claimed responsibility today for firing dozens of projectiles at the Israeli city of Shomera, in its second such attack and of this magnitude against northern Israel in a matter of hours.

The action was a response to what Hezbollah says was a "massacre" committed on Tuesday in the Lebanese city of Hanine, in the south of the country, where civilian deaths and injuries were reported, according to a statement.

On Tuesday, Israel announced the deaths of two members of the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah in airstrikes carried out in southern Lebanese territory, which have been repeated since the start of the war in Gaza last October.

The border between Israel and Lebanon is experiencing a moment of high tension, with an intense exchange of fire for more than six months that has cost the lives of almost 400 people, the majority on the Lebanese side and in the ranks of Hezbollah.

In Israel, 18 people have died in the north (10 soldiers and 8 civilians); while on the other side of the border, around 370 people have died, including 46 members of other militias, a Lebanese soldier and around 60 civilians, including 10 minors and three journalists, as well as several Hezbollah fighters.
