Father Dmitry Safronov led a funeral service at Navalny's grave in Moscow on March 26 to mark 40 days since the politician's death, an important ritual in Russian Orthodox tradition.

In an order published on the Moscow diocese website, Patriarch Kirill publicly demoted Safronov from the rank of priest to that of psalm-reader.

He also stripped him of the right to give blessings or wear priestly robes for the next three years and ordered him transferred to another church in the capital.

The decision by Kirill, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was not explained, according to the U.S. news agency AP.

Navalny died suddenly on Feb. 16 in a remote Arctic penal colony, where he was serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges widely regarded as politically motivated.

The cause of Navalny's death remains unexplained, although the politician's allies have blamed the Kremlin.

Russian authorities initially refused to release Navalny's body, citing the need for further investigation.

Navalny's team later said they had struggled to find a funeral home to handle his body after undertakers received threats from unknown individuals.

Safronov was among the clerics who signed an open letter appealing for Navalny's remains to be returned to his family.

In his more than two decades in power, Putin has overseen a dramatic rise in the status of the Russian Orthodox Church, which has gained prestige, wealth, and influence after decades of repression or indifference under Soviet leaders.

In return, leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church, such as Patriarch Kirill, have supported Putin's initiatives, including the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.
