Australia's spy agency, the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), said the operation was launched by a joint counter-terrorism team that included the federal police and the New South Wales state police.

ASIO said the operation involved search warrants being executed at a number of locations in Australia's second-largest city, but there was no ongoing threat to public safety, according to a statement.

"Australia's security agencies are working around the clock to provide the intelligence that enables police to act on these issues when we have immediate threats to life," ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said.

The Australian Federal Police commissioner confirmed there was "a large-scale operation underway in Sydney" linked to the attack on the Our Lady of the Annunciation Assyrian Orthodox Church in the suburb of Wakeley.

"We unfortunately have to take law enforcement action to disrupt further planning or attacks against our community," Reece Kershaw said.

A 16-year-old boy was charged on Friday over the attack, which left Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, Father Isaac Royel and two worshippers with minor injuries during a live-streamed mass.

Before the attack, the teenager allegedly made comments in Arabic referring to the Prophet Mohammed, according to Australian media.

The stabbing sparked angry protests, with hundreds of people from the Assyrian community demanding the alleged attacker be handed over to them.

The protests left dozens of police officers injured and six people were arrested, including a 17-year-old boy.

The ASIO director-general said the number of minors being investigated by the agency had been increasing for a range of reasons, including content posted or shared on social media.

"They are a vulnerable cohort," Mr Burgess said.
