An 18-year-old was arrested and charged with planning a school shooting Wednesday after Maryland authorities found a 129-page document in which the teen detailed his plans and said he wanted to become famous. Alex Ye was arrested on one count of making a threat of mass violence, the Montgomery County Police Department said in a statement . The case came to light after authorities received an anonymous tip from someone who had been with the teen at an inpatient psychiatric facility about a “manifesto” that described a fictional school shooting at a high school. While the document began with a disclaimer stating that its contents were “not a threat of violence” and did not represent “the author’s actual beliefs,” authorities were alarmed. Court records show that the teen allegedly put at least five people at Wootton High School “in reasonable fear of death or serious physical injury if the threat were carried out.” “The ‘manifesto’ has both fictional and non-fictional qualities and is based on reality with a plan for carrying out a mass casualty event,” the charging documents state. The teen allegedly wrote about his desire to carry out an AR-15-style shooting at his high school, targeting the elementary school because he believed younger children would be easier targets. He also allegedly wrote about wanting to become famous and setting a record for the highest body count. The teen also allegedly researched shooting ranges near him and information about other school shootings, and was part of a Discord group that glorified such incidents. Ye had not been attending school since the fall of 2022, but had been continuing his education virtually.
