Amílcar Cabral's Ideas for Freedom in a Poetic Event in Benavente

The ideas of Amílcar Cabral for the liberation of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau are the motto of a poetic musical event that brings together today, in Benavente, actors and musicians in a tribute to the African leader.

This cultural celebration takes place in the Cineteatro de Benavente and will feature the performance of Manuel Estevão, in the role of Amílcar Cabral, and the singer Sofia Carvalho, accompanied by the musicians Armando Tito (guitar), Djone João Paulo Santos (cavaquinho), Lopes Blimundo (percussion) and Nando Andrade (keys).

With free admission, the show uses "music related to the fight of Amílcar Cabral and based on some of his texts", according to information from the Câmara Municipal de Benavente, in the district of Santarém, which included the event in the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25.

"With his ideas to free Guinea and Cape Verde from Portuguese colonialism, Amílcar Cabral influenced other African independence movements and contributed to April 25, in Portugal", reads the note accompanying the announcement of the show.

The centenary of Cabral's birth will be marked with several initiatives in Portugal, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau.

The historical leader of Guinean and Cape Verdean independence was born in Guinea-Bissau on September 12, 1924, and left for Cape Verde at the age of eight. He graduated in Portugal and developed several works in the area of agronomy.

Founder of the then PAIGC, he led the independence movements in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau.

Assassinated in Conakry at the age of 49, on January 20, 1973, Cabral did not live to see the unilateral declaration of independence in Guinea-Bissau, which took place on September 24, 1973, seven months before April 25, 1974.
