Política 25 Abril

At the end of the solemn session for the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the BE coordinator, Mariana Mortágua, highlighted from Marcelo Revelo de Sousa's speech and his "vision as a parliamentarian, academic and President of the Republic" the tribute to the captains of April, the fact that democracy is made with several voices and protagonists and the fact that it is built every day.

Questioned about the statements, known the day before, in which Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa acknowledged Portugal's responsibilities for crimes committed during the colonial era and suggested the payment of reparations for past mistakes, the BE leader defended that "a serious, true, complete, modern democracy, which was made from a revolution, is not afraid of rethinking its history, of discussing its history, of questioning the traumas of the past".

"It is at that moment, when society is able to have these difficult debates - and we know that they are difficult because of the controversy that this proposal generated - that democracy asserts itself as it is", she pointed out.

For Mortágua, it is necessary to open a debate in Portugal that is being held in many countries, namely "about art, about culture, about the appropriation of objects from other countries and other peoples who have since gained autonomy and independence".

"I believe that this is an important debate. It comes late in relation to other democratic countries that are having this debate with their past, but it is welcome", she defended.

The BE leader considered that "Portugal must discuss its past and understand how it happened", being necessary to recognize that "there are things that can be done" and that in museums and in history there is a part that "belongs to other peoples, to other nations and there is no harm in discussing it".

"There is a right that blames democracy for everything bad that has happened and we must reject this narrative. Democracy is responsible for everything good that has happened to us", she also said.

According to Mortágua, it is necessary to reject those who say that "the blame for corruption, for unfulfilled promises, for disillusionment lies with democracy".
