Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking at a commemorative session for the 50th anniversary of April 25, in the main auditorium of the Belém Cultural Center, in Lisbon, to which he invited the heads of state of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor, who spoke before.

In a short speech, of less than four minutes, the head of state described this session as a meeting "of the future" and made brief references to the colonial past.

"Of the colonial past, we all keep the memories and the lessons that will guide us in the future", he said.

"From the past free from the last 50 years, we draw inspiration to go further in affirming the strength of our future, in language, culture, science, the rule of law, society, economy, peace diplomacy, sustainable development, fight against poverty, climate action, respect for international law and human rights, multilateralism, universalism", he added.

According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, "it was like that 50 years ago, with the April captains, culminating so many dreams and so many heroisms of resistance", and "it will always be like that".

"We promise it, in this meeting of the future. Long live April 25, long live the homelands and the brotherly peoples that April 25 united 50 years ago. Long live Angola, long live Cape Verde, long live Guinea-Bissau, long live Mozambique, long live São Tomé and Príncipe, long live East Timor, long live the precursor Brazil, long live the CPLP, long live Portugal, free and democratic, 50 years later", he exclaimed.
