"In the year that we celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25, it is crucial to reflect on how we can respond to the demands of new times with courage and responsibility", stated José Manuel Bolieiro, in a message released today on social media.

In the message, José Manuel Bolieiro pointed out that April 25, 1974 "marked the awakening of freedom and democracy" in Portugal and strengthened "the desire for autonomy", but in the future it is necessary to ensure that young people "can build an auspicious future" with opportunities in education, employment, housing and civic participation.

It is also necessary to contribute to ensuring that "the elderly age with dignity and security and preserve the right to their space and to their integration in the family and in the community", stressed the president of the Regional Government of the Azores.

The head of the Azorean executive (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), who participated today in the commemorative solemn session, in the Assembly of the Republic, in Lisbon, stated that five decades after April 25, 1974 "we continue to defend democratic values", promoting "dialogue and respecting the differences that unite us".

However, he added, "it is imperative that we pay attention to the emerging needs of our society and, in dialogue, respect its plurality, thus interpreting the sovereign will of our people".

José Manuel Bolieiro stressed that freedom "is a constant learning process that requires responsible conduct" and "where we must be the example of what we advocate, cultivating humanist values such as equality, fraternity and human dignity".

"Celebrating 50 years of freedom and democracy also means renewing our commitment to the dreams and aspirations of the Azorean People, ensuring that our Autonomy is preserved, deepened and strengthened for future generations, thus honouring those who came before us", he stressed.
