Mykola Solsky, who submitted his resignation on Thursday, "was released after posting bail of 75.7 million hryvnias", or about 1.78 million euros, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.
The same source assured that the minister "continues to exercise his functions". This is the first time that a serving minister has been detained in Ukraine, according to anti-corruption activists in the country. Mykola Solsky was accused of appropriating state land before joining the government, and submitted his resignation in a letter sent to parliament. "I ask you to accept my resignation from the post of Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food," the letter reads -- a request that deputies must now accept or reject. Several corruption cases have emerged in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion of the country in February 2022, particularly within the Armed Forces, but almost all have involved only low-ranking officers. Mykola Solsky assured that he is willing to "continue working" if parliament rejects his resignation. On Tuesday, the national anti-corruption agency announced that Solsky was suspected of having seized public land with an "approximate value of 6.9 million euros" and of having "tried to appropriate other land" valued at almost 4.5 million euros. Solsky is said to have acted in concert with officials from the state property registration and cartography service. According to his official biography, Mykola Solsky worked in a law firm until 2019, was elected a member of parliament that year and appointed minister in March 2022. Combating corruption, an endemic evil in Ukraine, is one of the main conditions imposed by the European Union on the country as part of its application to join the European community bloc.
