In the resolution, MEPs express shock at allegations that some MEPs have been paid to spread pro-Russian propaganda and that several have taken part in activities of the pro-Kremlin media outlet “Voice of Europe”.
While Russia is the main interfering actor, MEPs recall that China has also recently been implicated in alleged payments to a parliamentary assistant in the far-right group.
They insist that the response to these threats can only be effective if it is based on a comprehensive, long-term and cross-policy approach, jointly pursued by the EU and the member states.
The resolution – adopted by 429 votes in favour, 27 against and 48 abstentions – calls on the Council of the EU to include media outlets sponsored by Moscow and individuals responsible for disinformation and propaganda campaigns in the next (14th) package of sanctions against Russia.
