A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly saying on social media he wanted to "die a martyr" at the Olympic Games in Paris, France.

The boy is alleged to have "publicly announced on social media that he planned to create an explosive belt to become a martyr", an anti-terror police spokesman said on Wednesday, Sky News reports.

The teenager was arrested at his parents' home after he allegedly made the posts on Telegram the previous day, BFMTV reports.

The French broadcaster also reports that a handwritten document was found during a search of the property in which the boy declared his support for the Islamic State group.

Police said they are investigating whether he had a genuine intention to commit an act of terrorism.

The news comes after President Emmanuel Macron admitted the opening ceremony of the Games could be scaled back if the security threat is deemed too high.

France raised its terror alert level to its highest setting in March, having lowered it to level two in January.
