Lucy Letby, the British nurse convicted of murdering babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital in England, has renewed her bid to challenge her conviction. The 34-year-old was handed a life sentence after she was found guilty of murdering 13 infants and attempting to murder six others.
Letby applied for permission to appeal shortly after her 10-month trial concluded but was refused by a judge, The Guardian reported.
The nurse is now asking other judges to allow her to challenge her convictions at a fresh hearing at the Court of Appeal in London, arguing there are four grounds for appeal and that the trial judge wrongly refused applications made by her legal team during the case.
The nurse was jailed for life in September 2023 for killing seven babies in the UK. She either force-fed her victims milk or injected them with insulin or air. Many of the babies were premature.
Her victims included a set of triplets who were murdered less than 24 hours apart, a baby boy who weighed less than 2lbs and a little girl who was born 10 weeks early.
The former nurse carried out her crimes between June 2015 and June 2016. Despite concerns being raised, she was not suspended or reported to the authorities. Instead, she was moved from nursing duties to an administrative role.
Letby was first arrested in 2018 after an extensive police investigation and was charged in 2020.
