According to the Central Weather Bureau, the strongest quake struck at around 5:00 p.m. local time (10:00 a.m. Spanish peninsular time), with an epicenter 26 kilometers east of Hualien County and a seismic depth of 10 kilometers.
Four other earthquakes were then recorded within minutes, all with their epicenter in the municipality of Shoufeng, in the same county. The Central Weather Bureau has issued a disaster alert for the area, according to the state news agency CNA. Tremors were also detected in Yilan County - where they reached level four on Taiwan's seven-point intensity scale - in Taichung, Nantou County and Changhua County, where the tremors had an intensity of three. The tremors come weeks after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on April 3, killing 17 people and injuring more than 1,100. Since this earthquake, the strongest recorded in Taiwan in the last 25 years, 935 earthquakes and aftershocks have been recorded.
