Telma Monteiro promises to "give her best" to be at the Olympic Games

"I want to give my best, in the best way possible, to be able to compete at a minimum level and, for me, that's already my first medal. Now, I have to try to take advantage of these competitions to really achieve my goal, which is to be in Paris2024. Let's see", she said, moments before participating, as a guest speaker, in the 2nd Physical Activity and Sports Conference, organized by the Benfica parish council, in Lisbon.

Telma Monteiro's last competition was in November 2023, also in the Europeans, in Montpellier, France, where the judoka was forced to give up in the first fight, after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of her left knee, which required surgery and consequent recovery.

The Benfica judoka, the most medaled ever in Portuguese judo and also the female record holder for medals in Europeans, with 15 (six gold, two silver and seven bronze), recalled the fact that she is currently in a virtually eligible place, in quota reallocation, and about 150 points from the last position that qualifies via ranking for what could be her sixth presence in the Olympic Games.

"In the position I was in at the time [of the injury], I was comfortable. Right now, if I finished [the open qualifying period], I would be qualified, but the ranking varies with the score that the opponents also have in the competitions. Therefore, I can only give my best", said the athlete, with an eye on the European Championship, which will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, between April 25 and 28.

Telma Monteiro, bronze medalist at the Rio2016 Olympic Games, will have, after the Europeans, three more events to score - the Tajiquistão and Kazakhstan Grand Slams, and the Abu Dhabi World Championships --, in order to climb the world hierarchy until May.

"I talk about things calmly, because that's the way I face situations, I like to be pragmatic. I had no other option to return to competition than a major competition. The ideal would be to compete later, in an event where the intensity and level were lower, but I don't have that opportunity, by no means. The calendar doesn't allow it and the competitions that exist are of a high level", she said.

If she manages to consummate her sixth presence in the Games, the judoka will once again make history, becoming the Portuguese female athlete with the most participations, repeating Athens2004, Beijing2008, London2012, Rio2016 and Tokyo2020.
