According to a press release from the regional executive of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), presided over by José Manuel Bolieiro, the 43rd General Assembly of the CRPM will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, 23rd and 24th April.

"The work will begin on the afternoon of 23rd April, with the opening session scheduled for 2:30 pm [local time, 3:30 pm in Lisbon], which will be presided over by the president of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, and will be attended by the president of the CRPM, Loïg Chesnais-Girard", the source said.

The closing session, which will take place at 12:50 pm local time (1:50 pm in Lisbon) the following day, 24th April, will be presided over by the vice-president of the Regional Government of the Azores, Artur Lima.

The CRPM programme includes sessions dedicated to maritime affairs, energy, transport, the environment and climate, as well as a session on the future of the European Union's islands after the next European elections.

The Government of the Azores states that around fifty members from eleven island regions of countries such as Portugal (Azores and Madeira), Spain (Canary Islands and Balearic Islands), France (Brittany, Corsica, Guadeloupe and Reunion), Malta (Gozo), Estonia (Saaremaa) and Sweden (Gotland) will participate in the work.

Representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and the Council of the European Union and from associations linked to different island realities will also participate.

The Islands Commission, which meets in General Assembly once a year, "is one of the six geographical commissions of the CRPM, covering 19 European regional island authorities located in the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans", according to the statement.

The main objective of the Islands Commission is to "encourage European institutions and Member States to pay special attention to islands, to recognise the permanent disadvantages and vulnerabilities resulting from their insularity and to apply the most appropriate policies to their specific characteristics", it concludes.
