Tanzania marks 60th anniversary of union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar
Tanzania celebrated the 60th anniversary of the union of Tanganyika and the Zanzibar archipelago today, which gave rise to the country, at a ceremony in Dar es Salaam attended by six heads of state from other African countries.

"Step by step, we have built a solid house in Tanzania on the foundations of solidarity, brotherhood and African socialism", celebrated the Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, in the national stadium Uhuru ("freedom" in Swahili), in Dar es Salaam, in the presence of hundreds of people, despite the heavy rain.
"The best gift that we can give to the founding fathers of this union is to protect and continue to keep alive their great vision. We have all witnessed the great strides we have made in the past sixty years", she added.
The event in Dar es Salaam was attended by the presidents of Kenya, William Ruto, Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, Comoros, Azali Assoumani, Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, and Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The president of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, was also present, a territory that, despite being part of Tanzania, maintains a semi-autonomous government.
The continental territory of present-day Tanzania (Tanganyika), neighbouring Mozambique, gained independence from the United Kingdom in December 1961 and became a republic a year later.
Its first president, Julius Nyerere, promoted for years the union of Tanganyika with the Zanzibar archipelago, which occurred on April 26, 1964.
As a pan-Africanist, Nyerere always defended the political union of all the peoples of East and the rest of Africa.
However, many people in Zanzibar believe that the Tanzanian government has ignored the needs of this archipelago and has marginalised them politically.
