Auto Radares
The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) installed new average speed radars in our country, which started working in the last months of last year. However, if these radars are relatively recent here, they have existed in France since 2012, but have allegedly already been removed.
The reason? They are not profitable. On the one hand, average speed radars are expensive devices to purchase and also in their maintenance - license plate registration cameras are required both at the beginning and at the end of the radar measurement.
On the other hand, according to some French media, these radars generate a very small number of complaints. They result in an average of 5,000 violations per year, when other types of radars can reach 14,000 annual violations.
In Portugal, the supply and installation contracts for the new speed control radars cost around 5.6 million euros, according to ASNR.
It should be recalled that these radars allow "the inspection of the speed practiced by drivers by measuring the average speed of the vehicle between two predefined points on the road".
