"The President of the Republic betrayed the Portuguese people when he said that we must be guilty and held accountable for our History, that we must compensate other countries for the History we have with us," criticized André Ventura in the final stretch of the speech he gave at the solemn session that marks the 50 years of April 25, 1974, in the Assembly of the Republic.

The leader of Chega said that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa "must respect" the Portuguese "above all", because he was "elected by the Portuguese, not by the Guineans, the Brazilians, or the Timorese".

"Pay what? Pay whom? If we brought worlds to the entire world. If today, all over the world, the homeland and the world of the Portuguese language are praised," he added.

André Ventura said he did not want to "arrest anyone, or hold anyone accountable" and that he is proud of the History of Portugal.

"I love the History of this country and the President should also love the History of this country," he stressed.

On Tuesday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa acknowledged Portugal's responsibilities for crimes committed during the colonial era, suggesting the payment of reparations for the mistakes of the past.
