The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will have cut off relations with his son, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, following the controversial case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who received millionaire treatment at the Hospital de Santa Maria.

The information, initially released by the newspaper Público, was reported by the newspaper Correio Braziliense, which quotes the President of the Republic.

"It is unforgivable, because he knows that I hold a public and political office, and I pay for that. There are worse things in life. I don't know if he will be held accountable, I don't care", Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is said to have said in a conversation with foreign journalists, referring to his son Nuno's alleged involvement in the controversial case.

The same newspaper argues that the already shaky relationship between the Head of State and his son, who lives in Brazil, found its 'executioner' when the controversial case broke out, at the end of last year. Last Christmas, the division is said to have even caused the President of the Republic to spend Christmas Eve at home, away from his grandchildren.

"He is 51 years old, if he were my eldest and favourite grandson, 20 years old, I would feel co-responsible. But, at 51, he is an adult and vaccinated", Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is said to have stated, whose estrangement from his son Nuno allegedly began during a trip by the President of the Republic to Brazil.

There, Nuno is said to have scheduled a meeting with Brazilian politicians, to show influence with the Portuguese Executive, says Correio Braziliense. When Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa found out the reasons for the meeting, he is said to have responded with estrangement.

"I explained to a former Brazilian president, to party presidents, governors that, if I accepted him going, they would be convinced that the best way to reach me was through his son. And the son would be convinced that the best way to reach them was through me. This came a few months before the twins, which showed the correctness of my decision [to break with Nuno]", he added.

When Nuno Rebelo de Sousa sought his father's help to speed up the process of the Brazilian twins, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was about to undergo heart surgery. The case was put aside, also because the Civil House had already made it clear that it was impossible to interfere.

Later, however, Nuno contacted his father again, to say that the Civil House was against him. The episode took place in 2019 and the controversy ended up becoming public in November 2023, shortly before former Prime Minister António Costa resigned, following Operation Influencer.

It was a "boring" period, admitted Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, revealing with laughter that, at that time, the President of the Republic and the resigning Prime Minister consoled each other.

The Notícias ao Minuto contacted the Presidency of the Republic to obtain additional clarifications on this set of statements by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, awaiting a response.

It should be recalled that the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who acquired Portuguese nationality and received the drug Zolgensma in Portugal in 2020, costing four million euros, was reported by TVI, in early November 2023, and is being investigated by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

The suspicions of favouritism arose from an email message sent by Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to his father, talking about the matter.
