A team of archaeologists found four human skeletons in February at Wolf’s Lair in Poland, where German dictator Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders spent time during World War II.
A forensic expert examined them under the supervision of prosecutors, who were trying to determine whether there had been foul play, said Daniel Brodowski, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in the town of Ketrzyn. “The expert stated that the preserved bone remains were of human origin and came from at least four people, three of whom were probably middle-aged men, and the fourth was a child several years old whose sex could not be determined,” Brodowski told The Associated Press. However, the investigation was closed in late March due to a lack of evidence that a crime had been committed. As for the cause of death, the expert said it could no longer be determined because of the advanced decomposition of the remains, which he said were at least several dozen years old. The remains were found on Feb. 24 at Wolf’s Lair, which served as Hitler’s headquarters from 1941-44, when the area was part of Germany. The complex of some 200 Nazi bunkers and military barracks hidden in deep forests was the site of the failed assassination attempt on Hitler by Col. Claus von Stauffenberg on July 20, 1944. It is now a tourist attraction.
