What are the chances you are reading this article on your mobile phone while sitting on the toilet? Don't do it again. Besides not being very hygienic, you may be at risk of developing health problems.

A study by Initial Washroom Hygiene found that a smartphone can contain more than double the bacteria found on a toilet seat. One of the phones tested by the researchers had six times more (558%) bacteria.

The findings are based on tests that detect adenosine triphosphate and a luminescence reader, which recognizes levels of biological life not visible to the human eye. Detailed samples were collected from the surfaces of 50 smartphones. Analysis of the results revealed that more than half (52%) of the phones were "heavily contaminated".

In light of these results, Jamie Woodhall of Initial Washroom Hygiene, points out that "our mobile phones are a common reservoir of potentially harmful pathogens and we know that people tend to use them when they go to the bathroom". Therefore, "when people use their mobile phones and put them near their mouths during calls, they increase the likelihood of contracting an illness", he warns.

Jamie Woodhall stresses the importance of creating a culture of hand hygiene. "It is vital. (...) Washing your hands regularly is one of the most powerful habits people can have to help prevent the spread of bacteria and disease", he reinforces.

"We recommend that you wash your hands at least five times a day and always after using the bathroom."
