Luís Montenegro marked the 50th anniversary of April 25th today with a lunch with 50 young people at the Prime Minister's official residence, including tennis player João Sousa, writer Afonso Reis Cabral, singer Buba Espinho, SIC commentator Maria Castello Branco and members of the Armed Forces and security forces. "I am convinced that this April 25th, these 50 years, will be a turning point if we break a negative cycle that has been the hallmark of recent years: the inability to retain our talent in Portugal", he said. The Prime Minister argued that, "more than contemplating the 50 years" that have passed since April 1974, the Government is focused "on the years to come". "We need this generation of children of April more than ever for the future of Portugal, we need to stop the flight of human capital abroad", he defended, returning to what was one of his main campaign "flags". On this occasion, Montenegro reiterated some of his government's commitments to tax policies and support for the purchase of homes or renting by young people. "We are more available than ever to give you the tools to build the future of the country", he said, stating that he is convinced that "public policies can do a lot" to retain qualified young people in Portugal. The Prime Minister considered that many of these young people have the will "to stay in Portugal". "May we, at the level of public authorities, give them the tools so that it is not necessary to leave Portugal", he said, in an initiative in which he was accompanied by the Minister of Youth and Modernization, Margarida Balseiro Lopes. On the day when the 50th anniversary of April 25th is marked, the Prime Minister stressed that "the right to choose, the right to create and build the future" has been achieved. "All these young people, fortunately, like the Prime Minister - who was born just one year before April 25th - had the privilege of having academic, training, educational appreciation processes in their lives and did not face the limitations" of the dictatorship", he said. However, he added, there are still "challenges to overcome". "We need young Portuguese people to seize the future of Portugal, take hold of their immense potential, in all their qualifications - many of the best of the best are here - and put that at the service of the country", he appealed. The Prime Minister reiterated that it will depend a lot on the public authorities to find conditions for this to happen. "We want to ensure in this celebration of April 25th that the evocation of April 25th is also that, looking to the future, ensuring that the liberating dawn produced effects, produced consequences", he said. Shortly after the end of lunch, Montenegro, always accompanied by his wife, took a short walk through the gardens, greeted some people, but only stopped to talk to two children, one of whom wished him "a happy April 25th", at a time when there were still few people in the gardens of São Bento. The Prime Minister returned to the official residence without making statements to the media and only left again to attend the beginning of the concert by singer António Zambujo, having to leave shortly afterwards for agenda reasons. At this time, with many more people (although far from the crowds of other years), Montenegro still had time to take some 'selfies' with those who asked him on his way out of the official residence. The Prime Minister participates, at 6 pm at the Centro Cultural de Belém, in the commemorative session of April 25th with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with the heads of state of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Portuguese-speaking African countries, and Timor-Leste.
