Packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, fruits are a cornerstone of a healthy diet. "They are crucial for a balanced diet, helping to maintain a healthy gut, reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke and certain cancers, and can aid in weight management due to their low fat and calorie content," nutritionist Roxana De Sousa told the Daily Express.

According to the Dole Sunshine Company's resident nutritionist, there are three fruits you should be including in your diet "whether you like it or not". Blueberries made the list. The fruit is a powerful antioxidant, packed with vitamin C and fibre, helping to reduce the risk of cancer and aid digestion. Bonus: They're low in calories and carbohydrates, making them a great option for maintaining a healthy weight.

Cherries' benefits "are also undeniable", added the nutritionist. "Cherries are rich in fibre, vitamin C, potassium and various phytonutrients, and are particularly well known for their ability to reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness and lower the risk of gout attacks [ a metabolic disease associated with excess uric acid in the blood, and which causes pain and joint inflammation], largely due to their high phenolic content, which helps fight inflammation."

Known for their vitamin C content, oranges should also be included in a healthy diet. "Oranges and their citrus relatives, including tangerines, are excellent sources of fibre, flavonoids and vitamin C, which contribute to heart health and hydration," she said.

The nutritionist also noted that "just one orange or a few tangerines can provide your daily vitamin C requirement, essential for immune function and skin health". Plus, "these fruits are ideal for staying hydrated, as they are mostly made up of water and can contribute significantly to your daily fluid intake".
