The tunnels were discovered some time ago and have been under “constant technological and intelligence surveillance” since then, according to a statement by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). None of the tunnels crossed into Israeli territory, according to The Times of Israel. The news comes just a week after Israeli security forces urged residents of the Beit Lahia area, just two kilometers from Beit Hanun, to evacuate as they prepared for a new wave of military operations around the city. On October 7 of last year, fighters from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) — which has been in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel — carried out an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory, killing 1,163 people, mostly civilians. They also took 250 hostages, about 130 of whom remain in captivity and 34 of whom are believed to have died, according to the latest figures from the Israeli authorities. In retaliation, Israel declared a war to “eradicate” Hamas, which has now entered its 206th day and continues to threaten to spread throughout the Middle East, and has so far killed 34,454 people in the Gaza Strip, injured more than 77,000 and left thousands missing and presumed buried in the rubble, mostly civilians, according to updated figures from local authorities. The conflict has also displaced nearly two million people, plunging the overcrowded and impoverished Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a “catastrophic hunger situation” that is claiming victims — “the highest number ever recorded” by the UN in food security studies worldwide.
