Nearly 150 dead due to natural disasters since October in Mozambique

A total of 148 people have died, 206 were injured and 241,327 were affected by natural disasters in Mozambique since October, the beginning of the rainy season, according to an official report to which Lusa had access today.

The province of Nampula, in the north of the country, recorded the highest number of deaths, with a total of 30, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) of Mozambique, in an assessment from October 2023 to April 22.

According to the institution, of the 148 deaths recorded during this period, 61 were caused by lightning, 32 by drowning, 20 by collapsing walls and three by animal attacks, among others.

At least 7,417 houses were totally and partially destroyed and another 26,207 flooded due to the bad weather, with 89 health units and 42 houses of worship also affected.

The bad weather also destroyed 1,046 classrooms, affecting 500 schools, 114,931 students and 2,542 teachers.

The authorities also point to 688,790 hectares of crops and 225 power poles affected, in addition to 652 boats destroyed.

The 2023/2024 rainy season, which is ending, was marked by the passage of the severe tropical storm "Filipo" and by heavy rains in the south of the country, which caused urban flooding in the cities of Maputo, Matola and Xai-Xai and also in the towns of Boane and Marracuene.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
