Both the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are fighting for power, “have carried out indiscriminate attacks in residential areas using heavy explosive weapons, ranging from mortars to rockets fired from aircraft,” UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Seif Magango told reporters in Geneva.

He added that the situation was being compounded by a lack of essential goods in the besieged city, with violence hampering the delivery of humanitarian aid to areas controlled by the paramilitary RSF.
Magango also denounced the RSF’s “ethnically motivated” attacks on Zaghawa communities around El Fasher, which included the burning of entire villages.
“These attacks raise once more the spectre of ethnic violence and potential mass atrocities in Darfur,” said Magango, recalling that last year, hundreds of civilians were killed and thousands were forced to flee their homes due to clashes between different ethnic and tribal groups in the Sudanese region.
The official reiterated the call by the Office, headed by High Commissioner Volker Türk, for an end to hostilities in Sudan and for any human rights abuses and violations committed during the conflict to be investigated.
He also urged the warring parties to ensure safe passage for civilians and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
