After an unpromising debut in 2014 in England, finishing last in the group without any wins, Portugal obtained a historic result in 2019 in Bulgaria, reaching the semi-finals, in which it was eliminated by Germany.

The Germans, record holders of the competition's titles, with eight trophies, are the great absentees from this year's tournament, which takes place between 05 and 18 May, in Malmö and Lund, after having finished in second place in their respective qualifying 'pool', behind France, the reigning champion.

The French team defeated Spain in the 2023 final, but the Spanish continue to be the second power of the echelon, in a prominent way, with four European titles, won in 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2018, and semi-final appearances in all 12 editions they played.

Spain would be the last adversary of the 'Quinas' team in 2019, since it also fell in the 'semis', but the European Championship did not have a game to award third and fourth places that year, the last in which the Portuguese team was present.

In addition to the Spanish, the 20 players called up by coach Carlos Sacadura will face another former champion, Poland, which won in 2013 and is, together with France, one of the only two countries to interfere in the Spanish-German domain, although it has only two more participations, both far from the initial success.

Belgium had its only presence in the final phase, precisely, in that year (at a time when it was played by only four teams), finishing in fourth and last position, and seems to be the most accessible opponent, in a group in which only the first two classified go to the semi-finals.

The national team returns to competition after four years of absence -- despite the competition having been cancelled in 2020 and 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic -- thanks to a 100% victorious path in the qualification phase, which took place in Portugal, with triumphs over Iceland (1-0), Kosovo (1-0) and Finland (3-1).

Portugal makes its debut in the 15th edition of the European Championship against Spain, on 06 May, followed by the matches with Belgium, on 09, and with Poland, on 12, all in Malmö, while Group A, in addition to France, the trophy holder, and the host Sweden, also includes Norway and England.

The 2024 tournament has the incentive of serving as qualification for the U-17 World Cup, which will take place this year in the Dominican Republic, between 16 October and 03 November, a privilege of the two finalists and the third-placed team.
