"After a careful process, we have identified five Israeli battalion commanders responsible for incidents that constituted gross violations of human rights," explained State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel.
The US diplomacy deputy spokesman clarified that all these cases occurred well before the Hamas attack, on October 7, and outside the Gaza Strip.
Four of these units took "corrective actions" to eliminate the prospect of US sanctions, Vedant Patel revealed.
The Israeli military is under scrutiny because the 'Leahy Law' prohibits the US government from providing weapons and military support to foreign units facing credible allegations of human rights violations.
According to the spokesperson, four of those units "have effectively remedied those violations", thus complying with the United States' national security memorandum, which establishes that US weapons must be used without violating international humanitarian law.
Regarding the fifth battalion, Patel continued, the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has provided additional information that the United States continues to review before making "a final determination".
According to the US media, the administration led by Joe Biden is considering sanctioning the Netzach Yehuda battalion, formed by ultra-Orthodox soldiers, for alleged human rights violations in the West Bank.
The CNN station reported today, citing internal sources, that the State Department is divided over whether Israel is adequately using the weapons provided by the United States.
