Joaquim and Marie of Denmark recall controversy over their children's titles
In 2022, Queen Margrethe stripped her grandchildren of their titles of prince, princess and the treatment of Royal Highness, a decision that was not well received by her youngest son and daughter-in-law.

The year was 2022 when the Danish Royal House surprised with the announcement that the four children of Prince Joachim - Queen Margrethe's youngest son - would lose their titles of prince and princess and the treatment of Royal Highness, becoming only the counts and countess of Monpezat, as well as the treatment of Excellency.
The decision, which had been communicated to the family shortly before, did not go down well with Prince Joachim, his wife, Princess Marie, and none of their children, and the estrangement between the prince and his mother and brother was notorious - now King Frederick - who stood by the then sovereign in the decision taken.
Now, Joaquim has given an interview to the Washington Post, where the subject was again addressed. "Very few people know who we are, unless we are Danes," said the prince, who after living four years in Paris, now resides in the United States, at the service of the Danish Crown.
Queen Margrethe 'saved' her eldest son, Frederick, from taking a complicated step. Two years later, the former monarch's youngest son assures that 'they have turned the page'. Even so, Marie insists that what hurt them was the way everything was done and that she understands that, outside of royalty, it is difficult to understand that the gesture has affected the family so much, but she explains: "It is also their name. It is their identity since they were born, so it is more than what people see as a title," she said.
