Deposits from individuals grow in March to the highest value since December 2022

The 'stock' of household deposits grew by 4.2% in March this year, in year-on-year terms, to 182,203 million euros, reaching the highest value and year-on-year change since December 2022, the BdP announced today.

"At the end of March 2024, the 'stock' of private deposits in resident banks totalled 182.2 billion euros, up by 0.8 billion euros compared to February 2024", the BdP notes in an analysis released today.

In the document, the central bank adds that time deposits, which include deposits with an agreed term and deposits with prior notice, increased by 15.6%, to 103,876 million euros, in year-on-year terms. In chain terms, these increased by around 547 million euros.

In the case of companies, the volume of deposits in resident banks was 64,032 million euros, down by 1.48% in year-on-year terms, but up by 1,192 million euros in chain terms.

In the field of loans to individuals, the total amount of loans reached 128,226 million euros. The annual rate of change (tva), which excludes the impact of changes that were not motivated by transactions themselves, was 0.4%, and this was the second consecutive month with positive values.

The total amount of housing loans was 98,977 million euros, down by 0.66%, according to the tva, but up by 248.2 million compared to February.

The 'stock' of consumer loans was, at the end of March, 21,441 million euros, representing around 131 million euros more than in February and a tva of 5.8% compared to March last year.

As for the 'stock' of credit to companies, at the end of the first quarter, the total amount was 72,760 million euros, down by 1,796 million euros compared to the end of the same period last year -- tva of -0.8%.

By size, micro-companies were the only ones to have had annual growth (4.2%) in loans granted, while small (-3.4%), medium (-5.8%) and large (-0.8%) companies recorded contractions in this indicator.

By sector, industries and electricity and trade and transport and accommodation recorded negative annual rates of change, of -3.0% and -2.6%, respectively, against -3.1% and -2.5% in February.

Conversely, the construction and real estate sector had a positive annual rate of change of 1.8%, but lower than that observed in February 2024 (2.1%).
