Uma fotografia de duas meninas sentadas à porta de um restaurante de fast-food para poderem utilizar o wi-fi e, assim, participar nas aulas online, na Califórnia, gerou uma onda de solidariedade ao mesmo tempo que reforçou a divisão tecnológica que existe nos Estados Unidos. A Califórnia, sublinhe-se, é onde está Silicon Valley, a meca tecnológica do país e do mundo.

Na imagem, captada por um dos funcionários do restaurante Taco Bell, é possível ver as duas meninas sentadas no chão, com os computadores no colo e com papel e caneta à sua frente, no passeio. Alguns funcionários foram falar com elas para perceber se podiam ajudar.

Depois da publicação da fotografia, alguns responsáveis locais prontificaram-se a ajudar, incluindo o agrupamento de escolas das duas irmãs, que se comprometeu em arranjar-lhes um 'hotspot', para que elas possam aceder à internet sem problemas.

Luis Alejo, supervisor do condado de Monterey, no estado da Califórnia, partilhou a fotografia, escrevendo, no Twitter, que "é preciso fazer melhor e resolver esta divisão digital de uma vez por todas, para todos os estudantes da Califórnia".

"A Califórnia é a capital tecnológica do mundo, isto é uma vergonha", disse o responsável, em entrevista à CNN.

A família necessitava, porém, de mais ajuda, uma vez que enfrentava um despejo, por causa de obras que o senhorio estava a fazer no prédio onde viviam. Felizmente, várias pessoas da comunidade se prontificaram a ajudar a mãe e as duas meninas, que passaram a ficar num hotel, de forma temporária, até conseguirem encontrar algo permanente.

Safe I’m so thankful for individuals likeawkwardspice  she reached out to me and told me she was in contact with the mother last night. We got in touch and this morning we cleared our schedule to do what we could to help this family immediately. I am so thankful this mother allowed us to assist her and her daughters. She kept refusing our help but we kept insisting. She finally agreed to accept the help and we moved quickly. We helped the family pack and took their belongings to the storage. Algumas pessoas, porém, criticaram a mãe, insinuando que poderia ter levado as crianças para uma biblioteca pública. Um representante do departamento de polícia de Salinas desmentiu alegações de que a mãe fosse negligente ou tivesse colocado as meninas em risco. "Esta família passou por muito e é fantástico que a comunidade queira e possa ajudar", indicaram as autoridades.
