"China strongly appeals to Israel to heed the repeated calls from the international community, stop attacking Rafah, and do everything in its power to avoid a further deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.

Israeli forces launched strikes on Rafah, in the southern tip of the besieged Gaza Strip, late Monday. Israel is seeking to increase "pressure" on Hamas hours before new talks in Cairo, set for Tuesday, to try to broker a truce deal that the Islamist movement has so far rejected.

After weeks of suggesting it was planning a ground offensive in Rafah, Israel on Monday called on Palestinians in the east of the city to evacuate the area, ahead of a "ground operation".

Eleven people were killed and dozens wounded in the Israeli strikes, according to the Kuwaiti hospital in Rafah.

The Israeli military said early Tuesday that ground troops had begun a "pinpoint counter-terror operation" in the eastern district of Rafah.

Beijing "expresses grave concern over Israel's plan to launch a ground military operation against Rafah," the Chinese foreign ministry said.

"War and violence cannot fundamentally resolve the issue and will not lead to genuine security," Lin added.
