In an interview with various media outlets in Saudi Arabia, where he is participating in the World Economic Forum, the head of diplomacy for the 27 expressed his expectation that some countries will announce their decision to recognize Palestine next month, according to the Europa Press agency, citing community sources.
The High Representative insisted that the two-state solution is only possible if Palestine is recognized, the same sources said.
Although he did not specify which countries will take this step, the initiative of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta to recognize Palestine in order to boost the two-state solution is on the table, a formula shared by the international community, including the United States.
The United Nations General Assembly is expected to vote in the coming weeks on Palestine's entry as a full member of the international organization, a vote that will however be symbolic and non-binding, after a US veto led to the rejection of the proposal in the Security Council.
