The attack occurred off the coast of Mokha, Yemen, UKMTO said, reporting "an explosion in the vicinity of a merchant vessel," adding: "Vessel and crew are safe" and proceeding to their next port of call.
The Houthis did not immediately acknowledge any attack, though suspicion fell on the Yemeni group, which typically waits several hours to claim its actions. The Iran-allied rebels have justified their attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden as an attempt to pressure Israel to end its war against the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 2,300 Palestinians. The conflict began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on July 8, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking about 250 others hostage. Since November, the Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on ships, seizing one vessel and sinking another, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. The attacks had diminished in recent weeks as the rebels have come under a U.S.-led air campaign in Yemen, but shipping traffic through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has slowed because of the threats. U.S. officials have suggested that the rebels may be running low on weapons as a result of the U.S.-led campaign. However, the Yemeni group resumed its attacks last week. On Sunday morning, the U.S. military shot down five drones over the Red Sea, Central Command said. See Also: Houthis tally nearly 100 ships attacked in the Red Sea (Portuguese version)
