"The Civil Aviation Pilots Union welcomed the recommendation from SATA's board of directors that defends the annulment of the Azores Airlines' privatization process", can be read in a press release sent to the Lusa agency.
SPAC recalls that in November 2023 it had already expressed its concern regarding the privatization process of Azores Airlines -- responsible for the connections with the exterior of the archipelago - having sent an open letter to SATA's board of directors and to the Regional Government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), where it presented the reasons for its apprehension regarding "a safe and stable future for the company".
Last week, SPAC once again underlined that it expected from SATA's board of directors "a negative opinion" on the privatization of Azores Airlines, considering, among several other reasons, that "the consortium of Newtour/MS Aviation has reputational gaps that would jeopardize the future of the Azorean company".
For the union, "Azores Airlines is for the Azores, as TAP is for the country" and "you cannot jeopardize a company with great economic weight and importance for the Azorean archipelago".
Furthermore, adds SPAC, "about 80% to 90% of SATA's passengers, which ensures the public service of transportation between the islands of the archipelago, come from Azores Airlines".
"It is fundamental that in a new tender more rigorous selection criteria are adopted for the profile of the future investors", defends the Civil Aviation Pilots Union.
In this sense, and taking into account that the Regional Government "already has the opinion of SATA's board of directors in its hands", SPAC says that it "awaits with expectation the final decision of the Regional Government, which has the last word".
The board of directors of the SATA group, which has resigned, has already sent its opinion on the privatization process of Azores Airlines to the Regional Government, expressing "reservations about the NewTour MS Aviation consortium and about the limitations of the competitor".
The jury of the tender, led by the economist Augusto Mateus, maintained the decision to accept only one competitor in the final report, but admitted reservations regarding the capacity of the Newtour MS Aviation consortium to ensure the viability of the company.
Last week, the regional secretary for Mobility, Berta Cabral, said that "the Government Council will decide and it will be soon".
