The bodies of the French tourists who went missing on the island of Madeira since March 16, were found, SIC Notícias reported on Friday.

According to the television channel, the remains of the baker couple were found 100 meters from Vereda da Abelheira by a foreign citizen who lives in the archipelago.

Rescue operations are currently underway, which will be carried out by ropes, since it is a difficult access site.

Although DNA tests still need to be carried out to confirm the identity of the victims, everything indicates that the bodies found will be of the French couple who disappeared during their vacation with their daughter in São Vicente, Madeira, since the clothes are very similar to those described.

"99% certainty"

The woman's body was reportedly the first to be found, on Thursday night, by, according to Le Parisien, a "British hiker who lives year-round on the Portuguese island".

To the French newspaper, Luis Simões, commander of the PSP responsible for the operation, said that "despite the state of the body not having allowed the person to be identified, the clothes, shoes and the probable date of death give 95%, up to 99%, certainty that it is the missing French tourist".

According to the authorities, that area was "searched from the first day", however, "due to the rugged terrain and dense vegetation of the site", the bodies had not been found until now.

It should be recalled that the couple, aged 56 and 57, owned a bakery in Beaumont-de-Lomagne. The French were on vacation with their youngest daughter, Johanna, 27, in Madeira, when they disappeared during a "walk" that was expected to be short. It was she who alerted the authorities, about five hours after her parents left and did not return.

To BFMTV, the eldest daughter, Pauline, had already shown little hope of finding her parents alive.

"We have to face the facts, the chances of finding them alive are very small," she said on March 29, a scenario that has now been confirmed.
